During the year of 1906, the members purchases an additional six and three- fourth acres of land for the Fosters and moved up the hill and built a much better structured building. This one large single-roomed building was used for church and school. The founders of the church were Rev. Levi Ezell, who was the first of fifteens pastors, and Rev. Peter Humphries along with other ministers. The pioneer families were the Ezells, Mills, Humphries, Bonners, Nesbitts, Knuckles, Turners, Mosses, Goudlocks, Smiths, Capers, Peaks, McKinney, and Means. This church soon became too small and another church was needed.
From 1914-1915, the church that was built between the two roads up on the hill was erected under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. J.S. Earle. For more than 35 Years, Dr. Earle stood as a monument in this community. He was a great advocate of home ownership and education. He preached constantly about living on earth, owning your own home, and having respect for yourself and for others. Although he has gone home, he will forever live in the hearts of those who knew him well in the community and throughout Spartanburg County.
Aside from the founders, we shall mention those pastors who made a physical contribution to the church: Rev. T.T. Williams came to Foster’s Grove with a progressive program, and he introduced the first regular order of services. He was a man with high ideas who was also an advocate of education of the young folk.
Under the administration of Rev. M.P. Robinson, the pastor’s study and 2 restrooms were added to the church. Rev. Robinson, a dynamic worker, pastured Foster’s Grove for more than 10 years. He too believed in the community as well as in the church.
After Rev. Robinson, the members of Foster’s Grove received Rev. E.E Gaulden as pastor with open arms. As pastor, he set out to improve the physical, as well as the spiritual phase of the church. Under the leadership, the church started out on a building campaign. The old church was brick-vennered, 2 rooms were added, another choir stand was added, a porch was added, and a beautiful scene of Jesus was placed in the back of the pulpit.
Rev. Gaulden too had a progressive mind, and among other things, he instituted a financial filing system and a membership card catalog for the church. He wanted Foster’s Grove to be the best in the state. He often stated “To serve the present age my calling to fulfill, and May it all my powers engage to do my Master’s will.” We can truthfully say the he served his present age.
After Rev. Gaulden retired in 1976, Rev. W.E. Bryd of Laurens, S.C. was appointed as pastor Under Rev. Byrd’s administration, the membership grew. The education building was erected and was composed of 6 classrooms, and a dining hall. The All-Male Choir, The Byrd Singers, and a Children’s Choir were started. A church bus was also purchase. Pastor Byrd serves for 16 years as pastor, resigning in December of 1989.
